Google Search has trained us for two decades to type a phrase and sift through ten blue links ourselves. Perplexity flips that entirely — you ask a full question and it hands back an actual answer, with the sources it used listed right underneath so you can verify the claim yourself. For research-heavy questions, that's a real time-saver. Instead of opening six tabs and piecing together an answer, you get a synthesized paragraph with citations in maybe ten seconds.
That said, Google still wins for certain things Perplexity simply isn't built for: local business hours, real-time shopping comparisons, maps, and the sheer breadth of an index that's been crawling the web since 1998. Perplexity's strength is depth on a narrow question, not breadth across every possible use case.
There's also a trust factor worth mentioning. Perplexity's citations let you actually check its work, which is more transparent than trusting an algorithm's ranking blindly. But it can still get things wrong, and the sources it pulls from aren't always the most authoritative ones available. For quick factual lookups and research synthesis, give Perplexity a real try. For everything else — shopping, maps, local businesses — Google Search still isn't going anywhere soon.
