Using ChatGPT or Claude through their apps tells you almost nothing about what it's like to build with their APIs, and developers switching between OpenAI's and Anthropic's platforms notice the gap immediately. OpenAI's API has the larger ecosystem around it — more third-party libraries, more tutorials, more Stack Overflow answers when something breaks at 2am, simply because it's been around longer.
Anthropic's API has leaned hard into safety-focused features and a system prompt structure that many developers find genuinely clearer to reason about once they've spent a week with it. Pricing between the two shifts often enough that whatever numbers are quoted this month will likely be outdated soon, so it's worth checking current rates directly.
Rate limits, function-calling reliability, and how gracefully each API handles edge cases in production are where the real differences show up, not in a quick demo. For a side project, either API will get you moving fast. For anything heading toward production with real users, budget real time to stress-test both against your specific use case first.
