Runway vs. Leonardo.Ai: Two Very Different Tools Wearing the Same "AI Creative" Label

It's easy to lump every AI creative tool into one mental bucket, but Runway and Leonardo.Ai are built for genuinely different jobs. Runway is primarily a video tool — text-to-video generation, editing features like green-screen removal without an actual green screen, and motion tracking that would normally require dedicated editing software and real skill. Leonardo.Ai, meanwhile, is focused on still images, particularly popular with game developers and concept artists who need consistent character designs and detailed environment art rendered quickly.

Comparing them head to head is a bit like comparing a video camera to a sketchbook — technically both are "creative tools," but you wouldn't reach for one to do the other's job. Where it gets interesting is workflow: some creators use Leonardo to nail down a character's look first, then bring that visual reference into Runway to animate it into a short clip. Used that way, they're complementary rather than competing.

If your project is a short film or an ad, Runway is where your budget should go. If you need concept art or illustrations, Leonardo is the stronger starting point.
