Perplexity vs. ChatGPT: When You Want an Answer vs. When You Want a Conversation

These two get compared constantly, and the comparison usually misses the actual point: they're solving different problems, even though both can technically answer the same question if you ask them to. Perplexity is built around a research mindset — ask something, get a concise answer with sources cited right there, and move on with your day. It's closer in spirit to a smart research assistant than a chat companion.

ChatGPT is built for depth and back-and-forth. Ask a follow-up, push back on its answer, ask it to explain differently, and it adapts within that same ongoing conversation in a way Perplexity generally isn't designed to sustain. Try writing an essay outline in Perplexity and you'll feel the friction almost immediately. Try fact-checking a current-events claim in ChatGPT without browsing enabled and you'll hit the opposite problem: confident-sounding answers with no sources to verify.

Use Perplexity when you want a sourced answer fast. Use ChatGPT when you want to think something through out loud.
